No planting until Mother's Day!

Every year I jump the gun and forget the age old rule - don't plant until after mother's day. I was so inspired by the sunny weather a couple weeks back, I planted some coleus and now it's looking like it's not going to make it. You should always wait until after Mother's Day to plant tender annuals. You can 'harden them off' by taking them outside during the day and bringing them back in at night.

One other thing to watch out for this time of year is aphids. Check your Euphorbias especially. Not a spring has gone by where I haven't had to spray for those critters!

  1. Hello Cami!
So how do you spray for aphids in the Spring without killing the new growth/flowers? Seems like even the "natural" store bought products hurt the plants...

  2. The key is to spray at the first sign of trouble. If you are really diligent you can spray them down with a hose every day with plain water. I've tried the natural sprays and that's probably an easier way to go about it but you still have to spray often (every other day or so) and spray very lightly. It's really easy to overspray. I've 'scorched' many a plant.

  3. I just read this on another blog. Something to try to get rid of the aphids: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth

It's a product called Diatomaceous Earth. You sprinkle it on the infected plant.
